Project #1 : Togo 2017-2018

Location: Vogan, Togo (West Africa)

Project: Building of a new outdoor basketball court in Togo, Africa

Goal: $12,000

For its first campaign, Basket Plus has created a partnership with Leading Youth Sport Development (LYSD), in Togo, Africa. LYSD has developed programs and put together activities and events for youth and teenagers using basketball. LYSD brings young people together and offer them life opportunities otherwise they would not have, including scholarships.
For its first international initiative, Basket Plus has offered the possibility to the Women’s basketball team at the University of Ottawa to participate in this campaign. Our goal is to raise a minimum of $12,000 to build a new outdoor basketball court in Togo, Africa, in April 2018, as well as providing basketball equipment. This new basketball court – the Gee-Gees basketball court – will allow children from a disadvantaged village in Togo to have access to LYSD’s programs, but above all to have access to education.

Leading Youth, Sport & Development

Leading Youth, Sport & Development (LYSD) is an organization in Togo, Africa, that uses basketball as a positive platform to educate youth and give them life opportunities.

MiLéDou: Philosophy and Objectives
Meaning “We are together” in Mina (Togolese dialect), is a program allowing us to meet, with the help of basketball sessions, young children from the age of 5 to 20 throughout the Togolese territory from October to June. The objective of this program is to share our vision, to support local structures, to give them tools to drive their activities . Also to get to know the young children, to identify their needs, to offer accompaniment for the most Needy,  to follow the children in order to build a network with the leaders of tomorrow and offer opportunities to the most deserving (participation in the NBA camps, integration with the African Leadership Academy, scholarships Schools, internships …). During the MiLéDou season we organize special events for Christmas, Women’s Day, the day of the sport in the service of peace.
